 The DJI Inspire 1 RAW is the new, flagship version of this amazing quadcopter. The original Inspire 1 has developed a huge fan club since its launch but the RAW is the best Inspire so far.  This unit will be shipped as a dual controller system.

 

 

 

 

DJI have added the X5R - a new 16 megapixel Micro Four Thirds camera and three axis gimbal. But what makes this camera so much better than its almost identical stablemate, the X5, is its ability to record 4K video in DNG RAW. The uncompressed, Ultra High Definition pictures are saved on an onboard 512GB solid state drive at a maximum bit rate of 2.4 Gbps (average 1.7 Gbps). At the same time Proxy Quicktime movie files (H.264) are recorded to a micro SD card. 
This camera is aiming squarely at the professional market with the uncompressed video data allowing moviemakers to have a field day in post-production. The larger sensor offers higher dynamic range and better low light performance.

 

Inspire Raw Lens

 

The X5R even gives you a choice of 3 lenses which give a narrower field of view than the X3 camera on the original Inspire. They are the Panasonic Lumix 15mm, Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 12mm and DJI MFT 15mm. The Panasonic and the DJI lenses offer a tighter field of view of 72 degrees compared to the Olympus's 84 degrees because they have a 35mm equivalent of 30mm as opposed to the Olympus's 24mm. The Olympus is the lens specified for the Panasonic GH4 when used with a Zenmuse gimbal on the DJI S900 or S1000+. Other lenses will be available in the future and, although it doesn’t feature on the DJI website, the company has said the Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.8 lens is also compatible.


The Inspire 1 Pro is a fast and stable quadcopter which is much more compact that traditional rigs used on film sets. It’s easy to set up and only requires a compatible smartphone or tablet and DJI’s free GO app, which can be downloaded for iOS or Android devices.
 

The video from the camera displays as 720p via the app. Everything from manual camera controls to flight mapping and even auto take-off and landing are just a tap away, with more functions and updates being developed all the time. You can even focus the camera with a touch on the tablet’s screen. All of your camera and aircraft controls are at your fingertips with options to use either the remote controller or the app for many functions.
 

HDMI and USB outputs mean the pictures can be shown on a wide variety of TV screens, monitors and tablets. That’s great for showing clients or colleagues what you’re filming.
 

When filming or taking stills the camera and gimbal can be rotated to capture the action while the Inspire heads in another direction or hovers. Add a second controller and one person can fly while the other operates the camera. Now there is even a professional option to remotely control the camera with a follow focus remote.

 

DJI Focus

 

DJI Focus is an optional, follow focus remote control that will work with the X5R camera. It can communicate directly with the camera at up to 100 metres but, when connected to the Inspire’s controller, you can control focus up to the limit of the transmitter’s range. Where regulations allow that can be 1.2 miles or 2 km but in the UK you will have to keep your Inspire within sight at all times and no further than 500 metres away. The DJI Focus can also be used on DJI’s Ronin and Ronin-M handheld stabilised gimbals. If you need first person view for the pilot while your Inspire camera is concentrating on the action, Heliguy can offer an FPV upgrade to make your filming safer. 


The upgrade allows the pilot to have a forward facing camera and a separate screen. The tiny First Person View (FPV) camera neatly fits into the nose of the aircraft and uses a self-contained and independently powered transmitter to send pictures back to the pilot. This can be displayed on an extra, small screen attached to the controller or on a larger one on a tripod, depending on which way you prefer to work. You can select the FPV option on the drop down menu.
 

The DJI Inspire 1 Pro is easy to fly and can hold its position both indoors and out thanks to DJI’s revolutionary vision positioning sensors and a highly accurate Global Positioning System. When flying indoors or in a location with poor GPS reception, the Inspire’s sensors will lock on to the ground below and keep the drone steady. The sensors will even tell the aircraft when to raise or lower its undercarriage when it’s near the ground.
 

Even if you’ve never flown before, taking off and landing your DJI Inspire 1 is easy and safe. It takes just one tap on the screen to make your Inspire 1 take-off and transform, ready to start filming. Then tap again to have it transform and land. When GPS is available, the Home Point (the location you are standing) automatically refreshes, so your Inspire 1 always knows where you are even if you move around. When you tell it to come back, or in case of an emergency, it knows exactly where to go and land safely. As an alternative, which may be safer in some situations, you can choose the home point to be at the aircraft’s current position.
 

The Inspire 1 is powered by a fully integrated, intelligent battery. When in flight, the remaining battery power is shown live, letting you know how long you can continue to fly. Advanced algorithms calculate the distance of your aircraft and estimated time to return home, letting you know when it’s time to fly back. The battery tracks the voltage of each cell, the total lifetime charges and discharges, and the overall health and battery status. All this helps you to fly your Inspire 1 with peace of mind.
